THE GREAT CO-MISSION
Jesus came and spoke to [His followers], saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
I heard it from childhood. Jesus said, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature“ (Mark 16:15). Or as the up-front, globe-shaped poster in our church’s annual Sunday-to-Sunday Mission Conference (back in the 60’s) summarized it, “GO YE!” The visiting foreign workers, with nightly messages and reports, slides or 16mm films with their eye-opening cross-cultural content, drove home every believer’s personal responsibility to be involved in the global task to make disciples of every people group worldwide. I still remember the message titled, “Here am I, Lord; Send my Sister!” challenging us that the Great Commission could not be pushed off onto someone else; that God wanted to employ me in the urgent work of world missions.
THE PLAN
God’s blueprint for this world is hinted at in the Bible’s first chapter. After the LORD God created the first man and woman “in His own image” to be like Him and in relationship with Him, “God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth…’” (Genesis 1:26-28).
God’s fill-the-earth command to His two image-bearers went far beyond biological reproduction. His intent was for such image-bearers to go global – to fill the earth with people who would also reflect their Creator’s attributes – spreading His holiness, love, and glory on earth as it is in heaven.
But when Adam chose to go his own way, mankind’s relationship with God was broken. And Adam produced sons and daughters “in his own likeness, after his image” (Gen. 5:3). Consequently, every member of the human race has inherited Adam’s sin-bent nature and rebellious heart, and with it, spiritual, physical, and eternal separation from God.
But the Creator had a plan to rescue and remake a people for Himself who could receive, as a gift, His holy nature and pure heart, a people of His own who would become His image bearers for time and eternity. And He would do that through the gospel – the good news of His Son who “is the image of the invisible God,” who “suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (Col. 1:15; Pet. 3:18), so that whoever believes in Him and His redemptive work should not perish but should be in relationship with their Creator-Redeemer as His image-bearers to be like Him and with Him forever. What a plan!
HOW CAN I “GO”?
If you are a true believer (i.e., you’ve been transferred out of Adam’s family and into Christ’s family – see Romans 5), one way you can get involved (without delay from where you are sitting) and “go into the all the world” is to share (on social media or via personal messages via emails, texts, WhatsApp, etc.) ROCK International’s multi-language links with people who know little or nothing about God’s plan of salvation. Another potentially far-reaching, world-impacting option is to share the links with believers to equip individuals, churches, ministries, and organizations who have a heart to reach a hurting, lost people in their neighborhoods and around the world.
